The Power of Touch

John & Matilda Joachim · March, 2026
From the very beginning of creation, God designed marriage to include physical closeness.

Genesis 2:24 [MSG] makes this clear:
Therefore, a man leaves his father and mother and embraces his wife. They become one flesh.

This rendering of Genesis 2:24 in the Message translation highlights a profound truth. The phrases "embraces his wife" and "they become one flesh" emphasize the central role of physical closeness in marriage. This is not merely symbolic; it encompasses emotional, spiritual, and physical bonding.

Touch, therefore, is one of the primary expressions of physical and emotional closeness in marriage. Within marriage, holding hands, embracing, sitting close, or engaging in kissing are sacred and divinely ordained expressions of covenant love.

Touch strengthens emotional connection between spouses. It communicates affection without words, builds trust, fosters security, reduces stress, and promotes the overall well-being of spouses. In many ways, it deepens intimacy and reinforces the marital bond.

Regrettably, many married couples underestimate the power of touch. In some traditions and cultures, frequent physical affection between spouses is perceived as weakness and is therefore discouraged. Yet, Scripture presents a different picture—one in which closeness expressed in physical touch is intentional and celebrated.

As a husband and wife, how often do you hug each other every day? How often do you hold hands or sit close enough for your bodies to touch in a day? How often do you share a kiss each day?

Remember, touch in marriage is not merely physical contact—it is relational glue. When practised consistently, respectfully, and lovingly, it nourishes the heart, strengthens unity, and keeps the marriage covenant vibrant and secure. A gentle embrace can mend what harsh words have broken, and where words grow weary, touch speaks fluently.

Dear lovebirds, do everything possible to keep touch alive in your marital union because a marriage without touch is like a garden without rain.
